In fall 2016, the University of Iowa Assistant Professor Alenka Poplin led the CRP 391: Field Travel class to New Orleans to learn about planning, culture and history and to contribute to the WhoData.org community data information systems project. The students visited Greater New Orleans Housing Alliance and were hosted by Executive Director Andreanecia Morris, who provided an overview of housing policy, practice and planning post-Hurricane Katrina.
The students also met with Dr. Michelle M. Thompson of the University of New Orleans Department of Planning and Urban Studies, who manages the WhoData Project, which provides geospatial training and pro bono mapping services to residents, academia and government officials locally and nationally. The students were trained by Ms. Jennie Garcia (MURP' 17) and used the WhoData.org field training protocol to collect property-use data and images for more than 80 properties in the French Quarter.
